music note Music In My Future

For me, the excitement of music comes not from performing it, but from listening to it. Somehow, there is always music playing around me, whether it be by the radio, my iPod, or simply singing in my head. I derive the most pleasure from finding new artists to listen to, as well as attending concerts.

Early in my high school career, I ruled out music as a career option because I had no desire to perform for a living; I did not even consider the possibility of becoming a part of the business aspect. However, as soon as the idea crosses my mind, I was certain it was the right choice for me.

Without a doubt, the music industry is currently in a state of change. As illegal downloading and internet filesharing reach new heights, record companies both small and large face the difficulty of selling hard copies of albums, as well as persuading consumers to legally purchase from the internet. To some artists, the lack of revenue from album sales does not matter; they simply focus on the positive aspects of spreading their music to as many people as possibly. However, to other performers, this shift is, at the very least, disconcerting; why bother producing new material if no money will be gained anyway? This dilemma, among others, is of pressing importance to resolve. One possible career path I see myself on in ten years is that of working at a record label, or perhaps even starting my own. I believe I could help to find a solution to these issues that affect the music industry as a whole.

However, other career tracks appeal to me as well within the music industry, particularly that of management or marketing. Working with an artist or group to effectively increase their popularity while remaining true to their sound and values seems to be a challenging, yet very rewarding task. Whatever my future in the music industry brings, I am entirely positive that I will make an impact.
