music note Music In My Past: Pre-High School

For as long as I can remember, I've been singing along with the radio in the car, from belting Shania Twain in the backseat, to my mother turing the volume down just for the curse words in The Offspring's "Why Don't You Get A Job?". I picked up my first instrument in fourth grade, an alto saxophone, as well as joining the school's chorus. By fifth, I had expanded into playing the tenor saxophone as well, as well as participating in the All-County chorus.

In middle school, I continued with the alto saxophone, and later expanding again into playing the baritone saxophone as well. I also continued with chorus; aside from singing in the standard chorus for three years, I also was accepted into the Ensemble program, a song-and-dance group, and All-County Chorus for two years each. At the age of twelve, after much begging and pleading with my parents, I received a bass guitar; since then, I have toyed with writing songs on it.

In ninth grade, I prided myself in being the only freshman in the Jazz Band and Varsity Chorale. However, I discovered something very important that year - I do not actually enjoy playing the saxophone. I elected to switch to percussion, a decision that has proved to be one of the smartest I have made. Over the summer before my sophomore year, a friend called me to say that the marching band needed another bass drummer, and since the band teacher knew I wanted to switch to percussion, he thought I might me interested. I had no good reason to say no, so I decided to try it- again, one of the best decisions I've made. During the school year, I began in percussion ensemble, as well as dropping out of the chorus due to scheduling conflicts.

With the start of my junior year, I continued with the marching band. Percussion ensemble was no longer offered as a class, and the alternative, Wind Ensemble, would not fit in my schedule. I did not take band as a class; instead, I asked the director for percussion parts to learn on my own, so that I could still play with the band at concerts. I did, however, sign up for two other music courses- Electronic Music and AP Music Theory. The results of my work in Electronic Music can be seen on the Schoolwork page; AP Theory, though it didn't produce any physical evidence, helped immensely with my understanding of all things musical.
